Summary

Description
English: South Steyne launch Leith 1-4-38

South-Steyne (with hyphen) launch 1 April 1938 at Leith, 5km from the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. She launched herself a little ahead of the intended time in the ceremony. Her launch site is now very much changed and modernised, the Henry Robb shipyards now completely obliterated (except the remnants of a jetty) by a modern shopping complex called Ocean Terminal, with the former Royal Yacht Brittania berthed alongside, exactly where this photograph was taken. The National Archives of Scotland holds Henry Robb archives, including about 10 pictures of South Steyne at different stages of construction from keel laid to just prior to launch.

Despite the proximity, the people of Leith have seen themselves as fiercely independent from Edinburgh, and a rebranding of Leith Docks as Edinburgh Harbour in 2008 was strongly opposed.
