Summary

Description
English: "Societas Iesvitarvm Electa Regnis Portvgalliae Lege Regia III Sept MDCCLIX" ("The Society of Jesus expelled from the Kingdom of Portugal by the Royal Decree of 3 September 1759"), allegorical watercolour about the supression of the Society of Jesus in Portugal. A Jesuit priest stands in the centre of the composition, trying to burn a terrestrial globe against which lean a bishop's mitre and the royal crown (a reference to the Jesuits' offenses to both ecclesiastic and royal power); at his feet lie a closed book (symbolising the end of the Order's monopoly on teaching in Portugal) and a bag of gold coins (a reference to the Order's riches that were seized by the State); in the background, a carrack sets sail from the country's shores as a bolt of lightening strikes the priest in the face.
