| Description |
English: Sequoiadendron giganteum at Buckfast Abbey. Also known as the Giant Sequoia and Mammoth Tree, this is the species that reaches prodigious heights in the forests of California giving it its other name - the Giant Sequoia. In Britain it is the highest tree to be found in lowland areas. Typically the species has a pointed crown but storm damage, often lightning strike, can result in a more rounded form. This specimen was meaasured at 29.5 metres tall in May 2008, a mere stripling when compared with the giants of California that can reach 100 metres! It is believed that the species can live as long as 3400 years. |
