English: Sarajevo siege, winter of 1992-1993. American Firefighters John Jordan (right) & Philip J Rondina II took it on themselves to help to equip the Sarajevo fire brigade with everything from boots to fire trucks that they shipped to Sarajevo from Europe and the USA. They divide their time between fund-raising in America and fighting fires with the Sarajevo fire brigade. Bosnian Serb shelling and sniper fire made firefighting one of the riskiest jobs in Sarajevo when the Serbs began besieging the Bosnian capital in April 1992. Fourteen members of the 350-man Sarajevo brigade were killed, and another 30 were wounded. Here they wait to board a C130 at the airport. Soon after this photo was taken they secured a contract to work for the United Nations as the UN Fire Rescue. They responded to between 250 and 300 fires in Sarajevo until the end of the war.
