Summary
| Description |
Built in the 17th century, it's one of the highest in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After a fire in 1697, it was restored, then damaged again, and then restored once more in 1762. It is believed that this is the only (public) clock in the world that shows the time by the Lunar calendar. It stands exactly at noon at the moment of sunset in Sarajevo. When, during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, the clock tower strikes 00:00, it's the time of Iftar--the evening meal when Muslims break their fast. After the first beat, on the Beys mosque kandilji are lighted, and after that from Bijela Tabija, cannon which traditionally shoots, indicates the end of fasting for that day. |
