Summary

Description

Beyond Ashby Court I got to this magnificent timber-framed building.

To the left of the timber-framed building at 77 High Street is Sans Oriental Restaurant at 71 High Street.

I think that it is a Chinese Restaurant, since it has Chinese lanterns inside the window.

Sans Restaurant is at 71a High Street. The house is at 71 High Street (which might be offices now).

Previously 71a was Ocean Chinese Restaurant. And 71 was Wrensons.

The building is Grade II listed.

2 houses, one now restaurant. Late C17 refaced in C18. Brick laid to Flemish bond; gabled old tile roof with brick rear stacks. 2 plus 2-unit plan. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 4-window range. Plain eaves. No.71 has entrance to right of centre with doorcase with fluted frieze with paterae and consoled dentilled pediment to 6-fielded-panel door (2 panels glazed). Entrance is flanked by windows with brick flat arches over 8/8 sashes in wide flush frames. No.71a has C20 double-fronted shop front with small-paned bow windows. First floor has 3 windows with 8/8 sashes in moulded frames and one window to right end with 6/6 horned sash. INTERIOR: not inspected.

I thought that this was the Bluebell but it isn't. In fact it is St Loes, 77 High Street, a Grade II* listed building.

It does look quite special and historic.

House. C15/C16. Timber-frame with plastered infill and some brick to left return; renewed tile roof with brick end stack and rear stacks. 5-unit plan. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 5-bay range. Plastered plinth and mostly renewed sill plate; jettied first floor on flat joist ends and brackets. 2 entrances with battened plank doors in moulded frames. Windows have leaded casements of C18 or later with iron opening casements. Ground floor has 3-light window to first bay; 2-light transomed window to left of entrance to second bay; 4-light window and high-set light to third bay; 2-light transomed window to right of entrance to fourth bay; 2- plus 3-light window to fifth bay. First floor has 2-light window; 2-light transomed window; 3-light window; 3-light transomed window and 3-light window. First floor has close-studded framing of 3 bays with 2 narrower bays to left; arched braces to first, third and fifth bays. INTERIOR: not inspected, but recorded as having rear lean-to outshut; 2 C17 wide fireplaces to rear wall, that to right with original plastered brick shaft; chamfered beams; first-floor partitions with cambered ties and arched braces; some ex-situ linenfold and late C16 panelling to rear outshut.
