THREE OF SIX AUSTRALIANS BELIEVED TO BE THE SOLE REMAINING SURVIVORS OF 2,700 PRISONERS OF WAR, 1,900 OF WHOM ARE AUSTRALIANS, WHO TOOK PART IN THE INFAMOUS DEATH MARCH FROM SANDAKAN TO RANAU, IN NORTH BORNEO, LEFT TO RIGHT: PRIVATE NELSON SHORT, WOOLLAHRA, NSW, 2/18TH BATTALION; WARRANT OFFICER WILLIAM H. STICPEWICH, NEWCASTLE, NSW, 8TH DIVISION, ARMY SERVICE CORPS; PRIVATE KEITH BOTTERILL, KATOOMBA, NSW, 22ND BRIGADE HEADQUARTERS. WITH BOMBARDIER W. MOXHAM, PARRAMATTA, NSW, 15TH ARTILLERY, THEY WERE FLOWN FROM RANAU TO LABUAN BY AUSTER AIRCRAFT OF NO. 16 AIR OBSERVATION POST FLIGHT RAAF.
