Description
Français : Roue de barre et Figure de proue du navire l'Alert. Figure de proue du navire l'Alert, en bois polychrome, représentant le torse et la tête d'une femme, possiblement Lady Catherine Allen de Cresselly. Cette roue de barre, en noyer noir américain, est garnie sur sa circonférence de dix manetons ou poignées et fixée en son centre sur un axe central cerclé de métal, autour duquel s'enroulaient les drosses du gouvernail d'un grand voilier ou d'un bateau à vapeur. Le tour de la roue est ornementé sur une face d'une série de motifs animaliers et floraux et de l'autre de motifs géométriques et cosmographiques en laiton incrustés interprétant les quatre points cardinaux et l'étoile du navigateur. Les dix rayons de la roue sont tournés en balustre et sculptés de fleurs d'acanthe. Les assemblages qui composent l'ensemble de cette roue de barre sont à queue d'aronde et tenon et mortaise. Motif: étoile à huit pointes, sur le pourtour intérieur et extérieur de la roue, la forme d'un cordage est sculpté.
