Summary

Description Roman Museum in Butchery Lane, Canterbury, Kent. Silver spoons from hoard dating from early 5th century, found in Longmarket area. The spoons are discoloured with unusual black and green oxide, said to have been caused by the chemical placed in the display case to control humidity. Spoon bowls are annealed and cold-stamped; handles are forged; handle-bases are cut from thick silver; patterns are punched with a die: all techniques are still in use today by silversmiths.
