Summary

Description
English: Redgrave St Mary's church, near to Redgrave, Suffolk, Great Britain. A lovely church with a fine twenty-window clerestory and a 14th century porch. The buttresses on the chancel have empty niches. Inside, the church is spacious, and concerts and other functions are held here. The fabric is now maintained by The Churches Conservation Trust but the parish is responsible for improvements. The roof of the nave has hammerbeam and tiebeam with arch-bracing and queen-posts. Morning is the best time to view the splendid east window. The 14th century font is nicely decorated and has faces round the corbel of the bowl. There is an old four-wheel bier on display. In the north aisle is a superb monument with life-size effigies of Sir Nicholas and Anne Bacon (1616). Annes mother is remembered in brass in the chancel. There is a similar monument in the chancel to John Holt (1642). The church achieved national fame when a lady put her foot through the floor into a crypt. Further examination revealed that there are many other voids beneath the floor, where burials have taken place over the centuries.
