Notes
English: One of 16 representations of scientists and philosophers decorating the ceiling in the Royal Library. The portrait of the Polish astronomer constitutes one of the oldest of his official depictions (in the representative interior of the Royal Palace in Wilanów). It was commisioned by the catholic King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, John III Sobieski, at the time when Copernicus' works were disputed by the Catholic Church.
