Object history
English: The portrait was formerly owned by the London barrister Theophilus Basil Percy Levett and his wife Lady Mary Levett, daughter of the 8th Earl of Shaftesbury. An Old Etonian, Basil Levett resided at 61 Eaton Square, London, and was the son of Col. Theophilus John Levett, MP for Lichfield. Basil Levett was a Lieut. in the Coldstream Guards, and a member of the Inner Temple and died in 1929. Levett's ancestor Theophilus Levett, town clerk of Lichfield, Staffs, in the 18th century, married the daughter of Zachary Babington, Esq., of Curborough, Staffs., and descendant of Dr. Zachary Babington, Chancellor to the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield. [1] The Babingtons of Curborough were distantly related to the Babingtons of Dethick, Derbyshire, the family of Anthony Babington, and shared their coat of arms.
