English: The painting recalls the complicated procedure put in place for the election of the highest office in the Republic of Venice. A child was to draw thirty patricians who were to draw others, who still chose them, up to the number of forty-one. The latter elected the doge.
Français : Le tableau rappelle la procédure compliquée mise en place pour l'élection au plus haut poste de la République de Venise. Un enfant devait tirer au sort trente patriciens qui en tire au sort d'autres, qui les choisiraient encore, jusqu'au nombre de quarante et un. Ces derniers élisaient le doge.
Italiano: Il dipinto ricorda il complicato procedimento messo in atto per l’elezione della maggiore carica della Serenissima. Un bambino doveva estrarre a sorte trenta patrizi che ne sorteggiavano altri, i quali ne sceglievano ancora, fino ad arrivare al numero di quarantuno. Questi ultimi eleggevano il doge.
