Notes Moreau-Nélaton a daté la feuille de 1618, suivi par Daniel Lecœur, ce qui paraît beaucoup trop tardif par rapport au visage, encore juvénile du modèle, son habit à large col, sa longue chevelure et sa barbe ronde. Le portrait peut difficilement être postérieur à 1610. Il figure donc un tout jeune artiste au début de sa carrière et est réalisé par un portraitiste déjà affirmé, mais dont la manière évoluera ensuite pour devenir plus dense et presque picturale. Contrairement à ce que pensait Moreau-Nélaton, c'est l'unique portrait connu de Pierre II, puisque le dessin conservé à la BnF et simplement daté de 1608 ne représente manifestement pas le même modèle. Ici, l'identité du jeune homme est hautement affirmée par la main de Daniel Dumonstier lui-même qui paraît avoir offert le dessin à son cousin.
