e nearest inn. A party of four spent ten days in such a yacht inMay, 1899, living in the midst of oin- feathered friends, anda most enjoyable time we had. Our e\ening meals underthe awning over the boom, while we discussed the eventsof the day and om- plans for the morrow, were enliAcnedby the drumming of a Snipe across the river: and thelatest sounds as we turned in for the night were theripple of the water past our bows, the reeling of theGrasshopper-warblers, and the Sedge-warblers chattering inthe reeds. For this reason it is necessary to carry anoar, or a (piant (as a ))imt-pole is called in the Broads). The edges of these holes are luckily firm, and, with thehelp of an oar, you can get your knee o\er and struggleup again ; but they are exceedingly dangerous. A quant is also a most useful tool with which topoke about among the reeds and sedge, and in searchingfor Bearded Tits and Heed-warblers nests it is almostindispensable. By parting the reeds in front of you as youadvance slowly, and as quietly as possible, you can see thenests of th
