by forced marches on the 7th. From then untilOctober 5 the battery, armed as infantry, was employed performing picketduty, guarding trains, and transferring prisoners of war. October 5 it wassent to Maryland Heights and again equipped as light artillery. From December 17 to 28, the battery was temporarily assigned to theEighth Army Corps, and assisted in a movement up the Shenandoah Valley,beyond Winchester, and then returned and wont into winter camp on Mary-bind Heights. This camp was occupied until the surrender of Lee atApi)omattox, when the war being practically ended, the battery was againdismounted, and ordered to report to General Augur in the defenses ofWashington City. April 19, a mounted detachment of picked men was assigned to dutyin the funeral procession of President Lincoln and guarded the catafalquefrom tlie Wiiitf House to the train that ciirried it away from WashingtonCity. Lamon byPresident Lincoln to raise a brigade of infantry^ cavalry and artillery.This battery left Pittsburgh September 24, and arrived at Camp Lamon,near Williamsport, Maryland, September 25. There it was joined bytwenty-three men, Marylanders. The company was mustered into theUnited States Volunteer service November 6, 1861, for three years; engageddoing camp and picket duty, along the Potomac, until February 3, 1862,when it was ordered to report to General Banks at Frederick City, Mary-land.
