nce of the little town, especially in springwhen its dazzling white walls are embosomed in the green of cactus-hedges, fig-trees, and olive-trees, is very charming. The rapidhincreasing population amounts to about 15,000, including 5000 Moslems, 5000 Orthodox Greeks, 1000 United Greeks, 2000 Latins200 Maronites, and 250 Protestants. The town enjoys a certaiimeasure of prosperity; most of the inhabitants are engaged in farm-ing, gardening, or cattle-raising, some of them in handicrafts (parti-cularly in the manufacture of knives, sickles, ploughshares, and s(on), and in the cotton and grain trade. The inhabitants are note(for their turbulent disposition. The Christian farmers have retainecmany peculiarities of costume. At festivals the women, many 0whom are beautiful, wear gay, embroidered jackets, and have theiforeheads and breasts laden with coins, while the riding-camel whiclforms an indispensable feature in such a procession is smartly cap£risoned with shawls and strings of coins.
