Summary[edit]

Letter in [Latin] from the Roman Catholic Church's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Holy See of the Vatican, in Rome, in 1893, granting what today is known as the Pontifical College Josephinum status as the only Pontifical College in North America and the only one outside Italy. At that time of the document, the school was known as the Collegium Josephinum. Page one of a four-page document It is the only pontifical seminary outside of Italy. The document also discusses provisions for Josephinum students who will finish their studies in Rome. This change of status was sought by the school's founder Father John Joseph Jessing after he moved his orphans school and various trade opportunities for the orphans including the Josephinum Church Furniture Company. In 1888, Jessing started the Collegium Josephinum to train young men for the priesthood and to minister primarily to German-speaking immigrants. Today the Pontifical College Josephinum is an international seminary preparing priests for service around the world. Public Domain - More than 100 years old.
