Summary

Description

An 1839 stagecoach highway milestone in a farm field just west of Odessa on the north side of Ontario Highway 2 (which is Main Street in the village).

This location is an approximate midpoint between Napanee (11 miles west) and the then-rural edge of Kingston (Princess & Bath Rd, 12 miles east). Kingston downtown was two miles further (to City Hall). These markers were part of an 1839 stagecoach road; a half-dozen or fewer still stand on the north side of old Ontario Highway 2 in mostly rural areas such as Odessa.

Originally a muddy horse path, the 1817 York Road, this was converted to toll road and macadamised (as a form of gravel road) in the late 1830s. The stones are engraved on two of the four faces; facing southwest 'N' and the number of miles to Napanee, facing southeast 'K' and the miles to Kingston. These predate the Ontario numbered highway system; there were no motorcars, no 18-wheel lorries, no kilometres and no 401 in this era. The distances are in miles and are Roman numerals.

A sign at 2 and Collins Bay Road (Kingston 5, Napanee 18) indicates these as: "Original milestone Kingston-Napanee toll road First Macadamized highway in Canada Commenced 1837

Completed 1839"
