English: On Sheringham's Art and Sculpture Trail. Sheringham's Art and Sculpture Trail was opened on 3rd December 2008. The trail starts here at Lifeboat Plain, leading past the award-winning Oddfellows Hall > 1091519 down to the East Promenade with its recently completed Shipwreck mural > 1091531 by artist Colin Seal, who has also adorned a corner of the adjoining Beach Hut Café > 1091540 - 1093585.
On the West Promenade there is another mural by this artist. It starts below the Two Lifeboats pub and depicts birds which can be found in the area > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1093615 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1093631. A cold-cast resin sculptured plaque > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1093642 by Mitchell House, depicting the rescue of the crew of the Ipsolen by the Henry Ramey Upcher Lifeboat crew in 1897, can be seen on the sea wall near the Fishermen's Heritage Centre where the original lifeboat house of the Henry Ramey Upcher > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1093649 can still be viewed. On the other side of the bridge over the slipway below the Fishermen's Heritage Centre > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1093657 there is another plaque by Mitchell House > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1093789 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1093792. It is titled "Fishermen in their Ganseys" and shows Big John Craske (left) and James "Squinter" West. A gansey, a jumper knitted with a specific pattern, used to be a fisherman's most distinctive feature. A third plaque by this artist - it is titled "Sheringham at War" - can be seen affixed to the sea wall below the Tea Rooms > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1093796 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1093798. A short distance further along, the mural "Seals at Play" by Colin Seal greatly improves the appearance of the sea wall. On the green by The Leas, in front of the Burlington Hotel > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1093829 there are three wooden sculptures made from recycled timber from obsolete old groynes > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1093834. They were created by artist Tony Eadson. The compass in the centre points directly northwards. There is nothing but sea between here and the North Pole, a distance which measures 2,222 nautical miles. |
