English: 19th century painting of Urga (Ulaanbaatar) by Mongolian artist Balgan. Mineral pigments on cotton.
Detail of Gandan Monastery. One can see it was a mini-version of the larger Zuun Khuree temple-palace complex to the east. It was organized as a circle with the residences of the monks surrounding the holy temples. The tall Megjid Janraisig was not build yet. The Mongolian writing says "Ordo" or Palace.
Here one see the green-roofed Zuu temple (1869) and green-roofed Vajradhara temple (1841) and just to the right within the same enclosure is the Tsogchin Dugan temple (1838). And there is also the temple in which the 13th Dalai Lama stayed in 1904, within the same enclosure. These temples have survived till today.
