Description

A once proud building, this colonial style store sits on the main street of Ōkato, Taranaki, NZ. The veranda serves as a shelter for people waiting at the bus stop.

The faded livery on the top of the building says - ESTB. 1899 J. S. FOX

According to The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Taranaki, Hawke's Bay & Wellington Provincial Districts] (published in 1908), this business was once known as "The Okato Post Office, Telegraph Office and Telephone Bureau", and was operated by James Smith Fox as the district Post Office. They sold groceries, ironmongery, boots and shoes, grain, manures, etc.
