Français : Obock dans les années 20. À gauche, l'ancien palais du gouverneur, dite Résidence Lagarde, du nom du premier gouverneur de la Côte française des Somalis qui allait déménager le chef-lieu de la colonie d'Obock à Djibouti. À droite, la maison de deux étages avec le toit en pente fut la résidence d'Henry de Monfreid et de sa famille à partir de 1916. Monfreid conserva cette austère demeure pendant de nombreuses années même s'il n'y était que de passage à partir du milieu des années 20. À l'époque où Monfreid s'y installe, Obock était déserté par les Européens.

"Dès le matin, après mon déjeuner, quand le soleil levant m’eut chassé de la terrasse, je montai à l’ancien palais du gouverneur, la « boîte à thé », comme je l’appelais à cause de sa forme, rendre visite au résident. En l’espèce, il s’agissait d’un modeste sous-officier qui cumulait les fonctions de maître de port, de douanier et d’administrateur. […] Ce pauvre diable de sergent se morfondait dans une solitude dont il ne pouvait combler le vide par la moindre velléité de vie intérieure. Ses multiples fonctions étaient pratiquement sans emploi dans ce lieu torride et abandonné ou l’ombre exiguë de quelques pans de mur abrite de misérables Bédouins et leurs chèvres. Hors l’arrivée hebdomadaire d’un petit voilier de l’administration qui lui apportait un peu de glace et de vieux journaux illustrés, ses journées se traînaient, monotones et interminables, comme celles d’un prisonnier retranché du monde." English: Obock, circa 1920-1930. The two-storey house on the right was the residence of Henry de Monfreid and his family after 1915. On the left, the Lagarde House, named for the first governor of French Somaliland. After Djibouti became the capital during the late 1890s, Obock was quickly abandoned by the European community.
