Bust-length portrait of man in charcoal with chalk highlights in gold oval frame

In October 1846, Henry Longfellow recorded in his journal: "[Johnson] is to take for me all the club. The mutual Admiration Society which I shall hang in the Hall to show people what a fine set of heads they are." This group of portraits - of Charles Sumner, Cornelius Conway Felton, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Nathaniel Hawthorne - all hang in Longfellow's study.
