日本語: 南蛮人(ポルトガル人・スペイン人)の日本来航の様子を描いた《南蛮屏風》は、桃山時代から江戸時代初期(16世紀末から17世紀半ば)にかけて数多く制作され、現在では約90点ほどの存在が知られています。DIC川村記念美術館の《南蛮屏風》は、六曲一双の屏風の左隻が失われ、右隻のみが残ったものと推測されています。描かれているのは、南蛮船が到着して上陸したカピタン(船長)とその一行を、日本に住み布教をしているキリスト教の宣教師たちが出迎える場面です。船にいる水夫たちは様々な肌の色や風貌をしており、カピタンたちは丸くふくらんだズボンを身に着けています。《南蛮屏風》が盛んに描かれた背景には、当時の人々が抱いていた、異国に対する好奇心と憧れがありました。《南蛮屏風》は右隻・左隻に描かれる内容によって幾つかのタイプに分類されていますが、DIC川村記念美術館の作品はサントリー美術館(伝狩野山楽筆)や三井記念美術館の所蔵する《南蛮屏風》と多くの共通点があり、これらと同じタイプに属すると考えられます。
