Summary

Description
English: Photograph of the Rough Riders Memorial erected on San Juan Hill in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, beteween 1899 and 1905. The plaque on the inscription reads "In memory of the officers and men of the United States army, who were killed in the assault and capture of this ridge, July 1, 1898, and in the siege of Santiago, July 1 to July 16, 1898. War between Spain and the United States." The memorial was erected by Brigadier General Leonard Wood, out of general funds alloted to the American military government of Cuba. The memorial consists of a square concrete base. On the four corners of the base are artillery shells. The memorial shaft is made of concrete in the style of an obelisk, and stands on a square base with blank sunk panels on all four sides. The bronze plaque is sunk into the face of the memorial. A naval armor-piercing shell is placed atop the shaft's flat top.
