Summary

Description
English: Molecular evolution of the bamboos (grass subfamily Bambusoideae): Phylogram showing the three tribes, with branch lengths corresponding to nucleotide substitutions.

The herbaceous bamboos (Olyreae) have much longer branches than the woody bamboos (Arundinarieae and Bambuseae). This is explained by their shorter generation times, which lead to higher mutution rates. Woody bamboos are known for the long intervals between flowering and thus long generation times.

Based on a full chloroplast genome phylogeny for 33 species, Wysocki et al. BMC Evol. Biol. 2015, (doi:10.1186/s12862-015-0321-5), tree deposited at TreeBASE (study ID 16364). Plot created with the ape package in R.
