La leggenda vuole che rappresenti con scherno la moglie dell'imperatore Federico Barbarossa (che aveva raso al suolo Milano), ma forse il suo significato è da avvicinare semmai a quello delle donne che mostrano la vulva che appaiono in sculture dell'area celtica con funzione apotropaica (cioè per scacciare il malocchio): si confronti http://www.beyond-the-pale.org.uk/irish.htm
