Italiano: "La bambina ritratta in questo dipinto è l'infanta Carlota Joaquina di Borbone (1775-1830), figlia primogenita del principe delle Asturie (il futuro Carlo IV) e di Maria Luisa di Parma, all'età di circa sei mesi; è ritratta, vestita di un ricco camicino bordato di merletti seduta in una sontuosa culla imbottita di damasco rosso, appoggiata su grandi cuscini, anch'essi bordati di merletto, come la coperta, mentre si gingilla con un filo di perle. Il ritratto si inquadra perfettamente nella tradizione del ritratto ufficiale di bambini di famiglie regnanti, in auge già dalla fine del XVII secolo. Si tratta, come è stato rilevato da Steffi Roettgen, di un'opera di ottima qualità realizzata da Anton Raphael Mengs, pittore alla corte di Spagna in quegli anni,tra 1775 e 1776, come sembrerebbe indicare l'età della bambina. Si tratta di una replica esatta e autografa di un dipinto conservato a Madrid presso le Collezioni Statali. Esso fu forse eseguito espressamente per essere inviato a Firenze, per i legami di parentela che univano le due casate regnanti. La tela che ha sofferto ingenti cadute del colore, soprattutto nella parte bassa, rivela un'ottima qualità: il pittore, come nota la Roettgen, ha scelto l'utilizzo di pochi raffinati colori, tonalità di bianco e di rosso, e una sontuosa e morbida cornice per mettere in luce l'importanza della bambina" [1]
