Notes

"In 1684, at the age of twenty-four and while still Marquis of Collugado, he was appointed Commander General of the Galleys of Naples by Charles II. It was probably to commemorate this occasion that he had his portrait painted by the Italian-based Fleming, Jakob Voet (Fig.32) Looking older than his age on account of his heavy wig, he stares arrogantly out of the picture, with an old-fashioned helmet on the table

as symbol of his authority and a suitably solemn curtain as a backdrop." - Vicente Lleo Canal, "The Art Collection of the Ninth Duke of Medinaceli", The Burlington Magazine, Vol. 131, No. 1031 (Feb., 1989), pp. 108-116.
