Summary

Description
English: Advertisement for the Philadelphia workshops of William Norris, a prominent early locomotive builder in the United States, who made locomotives for both American railways and exported to railways in Britain.

Note that the "cut" (illustration) appears to be a generic one, and while typical of the 4-2-0 locomotives of the period, may not reflect a particular locomotive built by Norris; the same illustration was used on a Baldwin ad on the previous page of the same directory.

Note: image has been significantly lightened from its original so as to be visible.

This is a retouched picture, which means that it has been digitally altered from its original version. Modifications: Cropped and lightened the brightness curves to something that is actually readable, yet still retains the texture and sense of color and age of the original (the original was rather dark). Modifications made by Morgan Riley. The original can be found here: https://archive.org/stream/mcelroysphiladel1842amce#page/22/mode/2up.
