Summary

Description
English: Title page introducing De arte militari, by the Maltese-born Moldavian Prince "Iacobus Basilicus Heraclides Despota" (better known as Ioan Iacob Heraclid or Despot Vodă). The author is introduced as "Despot of Samos", "Marquess of Paros", and "Palatine of Wallachia" (read: "Moldavia"). The dedication is in unknown handwriting, but signed by the Prussian statesman John Christoporski; it attests Heraclides' participation in the 1557 clashes with the Livonian Order, which is described in portions of the book. Historian Ștefan Olteanu has dated the copy to 1563, i.e. the year of Hercalides' death in Moldavia ("Un manuscris necunoscut al lucrării lui Despot Vodă De arte militari", in Studii. Revistă de Istorie, Vol. 23, Issue 5, 1970, pp. 955–963).
