Portrait of Manthabiseng Kuoe, a woman of Lesotho wearing a straw hat. Original Flickr description: Manthabiseng had an abusive husband who, much to her relief, left her after she'd borne him eight children. When I knew her, in the early 90s, she was working as a gardener, and her eldest four children had families of their own. Now all but one of her children and most of her grandchildren have died from AIDS, and she continues to support the remaining grandchildren and great-grands by doing hard manual labor and by brewing home-made beer. Taken with an old Pentax K1000. I developed and printed it in the lab at the National University of Lesotho. This is a scan of the print. |
