Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) The Beatles in India
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) Aside from helping to visually identify the subject to readers, the image supports discussion of the Maharishi's "class photo" early on in the two-month retreat. A 2009 article in The Hindu described the image as "one of the most iconic photographs in the history of rock 'n' roll". Its use in Lapham's Saturday Evening Post article is significant because of that's publication's traditionally conservative readership and the success that the Maharishi in attracting TM followers among the business, academic, political and military fields, long after his highly public association with the Beatles had ended. It is also significant because of the accusations levelled at the Maharishi by his chief critic among the Beatles party, Alex Mardas, namely that he was using the Beatles' fame for self-promotion, and most obviously so in the 1968 class photo. The image also supports the description from Lapham about the Maharishi planning each detail of the picture as if he were a Hollywood film director, and positioning his most prized students (the Beatles) closest to him and the painting of his own guru and teacher, and the remaining students "according to the degrees of their celebrity".
Not replaceable with
free media because
(WP:NFCC#1)
The iconic status of the picture ensures that no free illustration could serve the purpose. It is a historic and culturally significant image. No free alternative exists, nor could it be created, as the Maharishi, two members of the Beatles and two of the female companions pictured beside the band are dead.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) The file will only be used in this article dedicated to the Beatles' 1968 visit to India. It is the only non-free image needed in the article. Although the image has been cropped slightly, the majority of the 1968 picture is needed in order to establish the visual context of the four band members, their companions and the Maharishi. The resolution of the image is sufficient to allow only for recognition of the photograph and its subject.
Respect for
commercial opportunities
(WP:NFCC#2)
The resolution of the image is sufficient to allow only for recognition of the photograph and its subject. The file has been saved at the smallest size possible to permit this while ensuring that the copyright holder's interests will not be affected. The image is not of an adequately high resolution or file size to permit copies to be made that would be of sufficient quality to enable an illegal copier to use commercially.
