| Purpose of use |
To identify radio studio and audience prior to a production of the radio series detailed in the encyclopedic article. During its years on CBS in Hollywood, Lux Radio Theater was broadcast from the Lux Radio Playhouse located at 1615 North Vine Street in Hollywood, one block south of the famed intersection of Hollywood and Vine. The theater was later renamed the Huntington Hartford Theater, the Doolittle Theater and is now the Ricardo Montalban Theater. Broadcast from this theater for almost 20 years, the program was unique in that few (almost none) radio dramas were performed in studios with an audience interrupting the mood and atmosphere. However, the Lux Radio Theater had its own playhouse to accommodate studio audiences who came to see top Hollywood actors do a live radio show. This photo then is a rarity, since it shows the excitement of a West Coast radio show audience not unlike a Broadway audience before a show. Further, few radio shows had their own theater, and the image provides information about the importance of this live radio program which had a long run spanning three decades. The article also includes a paragraph on the history of this playhouse. |
