side. The house thus created andthe garden near it are shown fully by plans in Fig. 129, andby photographs in Figs. 131 and 133. It is characteristic of Sir Edwins gift of unexpectednessthat he should, after adding a symmetrical little house tothe old cottage in 1906, make the 1912 extensions in anunsymmetrical manner. An examination of the problemshows him to have been right in his solution of it. The 1906building as seen from the south is so complete in itself thata western wing in the same manner might have lookedlike a separate house instead of an addition, and its sizewould have destroyed the scale of the 1906 wing. As it is,the complete scheme tells its own story, and it does more.It shows that the many houses which our architect hasbuilt of late years in an austere Georgian manner have notlessened his skill in the use of earlier motifs. I am inclinedto feel, indeed, that in freshness of detail and ingenuityin the play of materials, he has done nothing better than Folly Farm 183
