I MUST not charge these pages with a history of the islandwhence St. Aidan and St. Oswald carried the Gospelto Northumbria in the seventh century. Suffice it to saythat the fragrant memories of elder days conspire with thebeauty of coast and sea and sky to make Lindisfarne one ofthe most enchanting of English castles. When its presentowner, Mr. Edward Hudson, saw it first, the state of dilapi-dation was extreme, but the main fabric was sound. Theaccompanying plans (Fig. 58) show the original walls byhatched lines and the new work in solid black. They area little difficult to understand owing to the variety of levelsand the somewhat wayward run of the stairways. The castle is approached by a sloping way w7hich runs upfrom east to west on the south side
