Summary

Description
English: STEREO-A HI-1A image of comet C/2011 W3 (Lovejoy) in December 2011. The comet's tail is clearly interacting with the solar wind with several discontinuities visible. The comet nucleus of Lovejoy has been estimated to be between 100 and 200 meters (325 and 650 ft) in diameter. Notice the companion comet immediately above Lovejoy in the latter half of the sequence; it is speculated that this fragment broke off of Lovejoy several decades ago, due to the separation between the two.
