Rihanna sings the second half of the chorus over an electric guitar and a piano. A reporter noted that her voice is regretful and sad despite there being no vibrato, a musical effect used for expression. The song follows the Gm–E♭_(add2)–B♭–F/A chord progression in the chorus. The chorus is pop. Eminem begins the second verse, rapping over an acoustic guitar recorded by Alex da Kid and a piano. Other instrumentation is provided by pounding drums and violin. His voice is angry and frustrated. He follows the Gm–E♭_(add2)B♭–Fsus/A chord progression on the verses. Eminem's rapping was called dark. The "slow burning" composition of the song was compared to that of British singer Adele's song "Someone Like You".[1] Both were considered ballads.
