Object history 1926: given to National Museum in Warsaw (MNW) by Antoni Wieniawski
Notes The smoothly lit chiaroscuro composition accentuates the modellation of Cato's body, in the moment when he is about to kill himself while reading the Phaedo, a dialogue of Plato which details the death of Socrates. Loth, who was naturalised in Venice, liked to employ the elegant canon of gestural movement learned when he studied 16th century Venetian painting.
