Summary

Description Lot-9425-12: Hero of World War Fights Again. Diminutive, 47-year old Sergeant Louis Van Yersel, one of America’s outstanding heroes of World War I and Medal of Honor recipient, is pictured at U.S. Marine recruiting headquarters in Los Angeles, California, being sworn into fight in World War II. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marines with the 3rd Marine Division in the Pacific. Van Iersel was born in the Netherlands on October 19, 1893, and he died on June 9, 1987. Photograph released March 1942. Office of War Information. (2015/11/13).
