We occasionally see this white squirrel hanging around our neighborhood, and today it conveniently decided to take a little rest on a branch so I could get a picture. I kept hoping it would creep up a bit so that it was entirely in the sun, but no such luck so I'll have to live with a bit of shadow.
Leucism refers to the partial loss of pigmentation in an animal, in contrast to albinism which involves a total loss of melanin (and thus leads to pink eyes in mammals). The black eye in this case is diagnostic and clearly indicates that this squirrel is not albino.
