Summary

Description
English: An excerpt from the cover of an illustrated supplement to the magazine Petit Parisien" dated November 2, 1902, for the fiftieth anniversary of the demonstration by Léon Foucault of the rotation of the Earth hanging a pendulum at the dome of the Panthéon in Paris in 1851. The pendulum is released without any further disturbance than natural gravity by burning a cord. The initial velocity is nil relative to the Earth, but the pendulum does not return in the same plane but slightly offset demonstrating the rotation of the Earth relative to the celestial sphere. After one hour the public, in numbers at this event, could see that the plane of oscillation had shifted 11°.
The image is slightly reworked compared to the original using Gimp to extract the detail of the launch and enhance colors, contrast and white balance.
