Summary

Description
English: Lady Chapel. This chapel, set on the wooded slope of Ruebury Hill and overlooking the Cleveland Plain pre-dates the nearby Mount Grace Priory (SE4498). It is said that in 1398 Carthusian Monks climbed the hill to this place of pilgrimage, a Shrine to Our Lady, and was so moved they built the priory at the foot of the hill. By the sixteenth century the Shrine was in ruins but was still a site of pilgrimage. In 1665 Franciscan Friars came to look after the pilgrims but were forced to leave in 1832. The chapel was rebuilt in 1960 by two brothers who discovered that the ruins were still being used as an undocumented place of pilgrimage from all over the country. Nine years later the Franciscan Friars returned. See 440276 for a view of the interior and further history.
