Summary

Description
English: A Knollenorgan drawn by the German anatomist Viktor Franz, 1921. The microscopic organ is a group of up to 8 receptor cells, up to 60 microns across, attached to a single large myelinated nerve, and placed in a small pit in the skin. The outer surface of the receptor cells is covered in microvilli, providing a very large surface area. Knollenorgans are electroreceptors in the skin of elephantfishes (Mormyridae).
