English: Kneeling warrior figurine from the Earthenware Warrior Pit 1 Shizi Mountain Xuzhou Jiangsu Western Han 2nd century BCE. This charioteer was among the four thousand ceramic figurines of foot soldiers, archers, and cavalrymen who were buried in pits near the Shizi Mountain tomb to protect the second king of Chu in the afterlife. After the Rebelliion of the Seven States in 154 BCE in which the third king of Chu was killed by the emperor, the central government withdrew the privilege of owning troops from vassal kingdoms. Thereafter no royal tombs contained large arrays of clay or wooden figurines of warriors. Because charioteers were vulnerable to attacks, they wear metal headgear covering their heads and shoulders and heavy leather armor to protect their upper body. More than two hundred figurines of this type were found at the Shizi Mountain site. |
