Description
English: This photograph was taken off the west coast of Graham Land, Antarctica from on board the National Geographic Explorer expedition ship. It captures four killer whales swimming in close cooperation just below the surface of the water as they charge an ice floe bearing a crabeater seal. By cooperatively hunting in this manner, the whales create a strong bow wave with which they hope to wash the seal off the ice floe. The seal, known informally as "Kevin", eventually escaped after enduring three dozen such attempts to make him into a shared meal.
Français : Cette photographie a été prise au large de la côte ouest de la Terre de Graham, en Antarctique, à bord du navire d'expédition National Geographic Explorer. Elle montre quatre orques nageant en étroite collaboration juste sous la surface de l'eau alors qu'elles chargent un bloc de glace sur lequel se trouve un phoque crabier. En chassant de cette manière, les orques créent une forte vague de proue avec laquelle elles espèrent balayer le phoque hors de la banquise. Le phoque, connu sous le nom informel de « Kevin », s'est finalement échappé après avoir subi trois douzaines de tentatives d'en faire un repas des orques.
