The image serves as the primary means of visual identification of the subject, illustrating a single educational article. It is not otherwise possible to accurately describe the appearance of the character solely through a textual medium sufficient to create a picture in one's mind, so the image is significant in illustrating the subject of the article, facilitating critical commentary as it provides an immediate relevance to the reader more capably than the textual description alone. The juxtaposition of Frank eating in his shirtsleeves, meal smothered in brown sauce, and Ken in a tie, disdainful of the condiment, was used to establish Ken's characterisation as a snob, in conflict with his parents over his rejection of his working-class roots. |
