Summary

Description
English: The Department of Agriculture in partnership with the Philippine Coconut Authority conducted a training on the cultivation of Karagumoy (Pandanus simplex) last year as part of the Indigenous Crops Program series of activities. A review however of Bicol's agricultural history specifically from the Philippine Craftsman series of 1913 appears that Bulusan is a century ahead in the cultivation of the crop. The two government agencies highly recommend karagumoy as companion plant for coconut and pili nut trees in Bicol farms.

The karagumoy grows naturally after suckers are planted and can spread on their own without much care after planting as shown in the above photo.

Karagumoy is perennial. It is botanically classified as a tree. Its long firm leaves are the materials employed in weaving the common utility hats, mats and bay-ongs.

Bulusan's karagumoy-under-the-coconut-and-pili-trees farm practice is an example of a best practice in agriculture that is tested by time.
