Summary

Description

Gwanghuimun is open for the public.

Gwanghuimun will be open to the public for the first time in 39 years. It has been closed for restoration since 1975.

One of the Four Small Gates in the historic fortress walls of Seoul, Gwanghuimun was built in 1396 in the southeastern part of the walled capital. It was first called Sugumun(“Water Channel Gate”) but soon came to be more widely known as Namsomun (“Small South Gate”). The gate was rebuilt in 1711, and the gatehouse was completed in 1719. It was in that year the gate’s name plaque was hung. The gatehouse and battlements around it were destroyed during the Korean War, only to be restored in 1976. The current Gwanghuimun is located slightly futher south of the original site due to roads being built there. –from Information Plaque
